Connecting Readers with Finger Lakes Authors

Spotlight on Dorothy Callahan

How long have you been writing?

Oh, dear. I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing, but I guess we could accurately say 80% of my life.

When you write, do you prefer pen and paper, or the computer?

I was always a devout fan of the mighty pen, but over the past few years/books, I’ve found it easier to work straight from the keyboard.

Of the books you’ve written, which one is your favorite and why?

I’d have to say Crazy Little Fling. Once my husband and I went to Key West, I fell in love with the island and felt compelled to write about it to relive the wonderful experience. (And Gunner Fitz is the hottest DEA agent ever, BTW.)

What’s your favorite book by another author?

Oh, that would be Darkfire Kiss, by Deborah Cooke. It’s book 5 in her Dragonfire series. Like the 5 in Tarot, this story is chaotic, and filled with twists and a superhot dragon dude.

What was your favorite childhood book?

Don’t get mad, but it was Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I read and cried through that book more times than I can recall.

Where did you grow up, and what impact did it have on your writing?

I grew up in Rochester, NY, just a short drive south to the beautiful Finger Lake region. My family would go to Canandaigua every summer for the beach. It’s such a great place to relax, shop, swim, relax, canoe, relax, and did I mention relax? I’m not sure how much impact it had on my writing; I would credit all my English teachers through the years with that one. Maybe they loved teaching in Rochester because they could also relax in the Finger Lakes region? Hmm.

What’s your secret guilty pleasure?

Chocolate, but if you’ve met me, you’ll know it’s no secret!

Favorite thing to binge watch?

Anything that CAN be binge watched WILL be binge watched! Honestly, though, mostly superhero series, as I love the idea of a regular person gaining powers and changing theworld for the better. But then there’s the Breaking Bad and Handmaid’s Tale marathon to slap some terrifying reality into the fold.

What’s something that’s still on your bucket list?

I totally need to go to Europe. Or Great Britain. Or Belize. Or the pyramids (Egyptian or Mayan). Or the Caribbean. Or Hawaii. Or… wow, I’m pathetically under-travelled.

What’s the most dominant color in your wardrobe?

Did you know that scrubs come in every color and pattern imaginable? Bonus: it’s like wearing jammies to work Every Single Day. Score!
